Mindful : April 2017
Illustrations by Missy Chimovitz Wake up! Feel the weight and warmth of the covers, then stick a foot out and feel the cool air touch your skin. Make some coffee. But before you do, put your nose up to the beans and take a big, deep inhale. Notice if your brain makes any associations as you smell. Take a shower. Listen to the water as it falls. Feel as it rains down upon your head. Really notice the smell of your shampoo. Turn the water to cold and see how long you can handle it—bonus points if you can last a whole minute! Open your front door. Let a little air rush inside and notice how it feels and smells. Then step outside and slowly scan the horizon. Go for a walk. Wander aim- lessly—really, truly aimlessly. Soak in your surroundings without judgment. Take a trip to a farmers market to buy ingredients for dinner. Pick up each piece of produce and smell it; feel it in your hands. Eat dinner—in silence (and keep electronic devices far, far away). Focus all your energy on smelling, seeing, tasting, and feeling the food in your mouth as you chew. Grab a pencil and paper. Sharpen your pencil, noticing the smell of fresh shavings as you go. Then pick an ordinary object in your house and draw it without ever looking down at the paper. Make Today a Sense Adventure! Go to bed! Feel the cool cov- ers get warmer as your body transmits heat. Treat yourself. Go out for lunch somewhere you’ve never been before. Order something you wouldn’t normally think to try. Drink a glass of cold water and try to really taste it. Feel it as it slides down your throat into your stomach.
