For college stu- dents who drink to excess, a brief weekly mindful- ness intervention may help, accord- ing to a pilot study measuring the effects on student binge drinkers participating in a 4-week, 60-minute mindfulness group. Researchers split 76 undergrads into a mindful- ness group and a control group. The mindful- ness group did an hour each week of group activi- ties and group practice, plus an hour of individual meditation. The mindfulness group reported substantially fewer binges, fewer consequences from drinking, better ability to make decisions regarding alcohol, and higher levels of dispositional mindfulness—a natural tendency toward aware and intentional behavior. The menstrual cup is an environ- mentally friendly alternative to tampons and pads, so techies kicked it up a notch—users receive aler ts on their phone when the cup is full or when fluid color seems unhealthy. THE PPLKPR APP (pro- nounced “people keeper”) uses GPS, heart-rate monitoring, and questionnaires to measure which friends stress you out. THE WAY DEVICE is shaped like a makeup com- pact, and when you press it to your face, it tracks moisture levels and the UV index—it can even guess your skin’s age. ● BIO- MEASURING ROUNDUP Yale vs. High School Stress Underg rads at Yale University are bringing mindfulness to New Haven high schools as part of the Yale Underg raduate Mindfulness Educa- tion Initiative (YUMEI), a student organization that promotes mental well-being through stress manage- ment workshops on campus and in the wider New Haven community. “Teenagers grapple with stress from a variety of sources: everything from academics to changing inter- personal relationships,” while lots of New Haven families struggle to make ends meet and with domestic violence and many other stressors, YUMEI treasurer Elizabeth Karron told the Yale Daily News. The students’s first workshop was piloted in a small num- ber of local schools in fall 2015.
