Mindful : August 2015
10 Listen, really listen, to a piece of music Sit or lie down and listen to an entire album, sym- phony, opera, or whatever suits your taste. You may feel yourself twitching or reaching for your phone at first, but soon you’ll sink into the sounds. A BOX OF SIMPLE ADVICE 1 When you feel the energy of fear arising in your body, DON’T AVOID the feeling. Sit with it. Let it be there. Breathe deeply and naturally. 2 As fearful thoughts of dread and worry continue to emerge, approach them with FRIENDLINESS. Don’t treat them as a threat. 3 Be kind toward yourself for being afraid. See what happens when you hold your ground and let the fear arise in your mind. You may surprise yourself and FIND CONFIDENCE within. Repeat as necessary. 11 Take a vacation Americans took less vaca- tion time in 2014 than in four previous decades, according to the US Travel Association. Only 57% of the nation’s workers used all of their paid vacation time, and people with higher annual incomes took the least days off. Definitely not a good way to avoid stress and its harmful effects. Time off actually makes you a more productive worker. Plus, your family will appre- ciate it and you’ll have time and space to really take care of yourself. ● Facing Your Fears Fears—of the future, of inadequacy, of loss, etc., etc., etc.— are big causes of stress. In fact, fear and stress are nearly synonymous. Here’s a small routine to bring some mindfulness to your fear. August 2015 mindful 27 PHOTOGRAPHS:©ALEXEYKUZNETSOV,ZEA_LENANET/DOLLARPHOTOCLUB
