Spoiler alert: The Force Awakens wraps with Rey, a Jedi who has recently tapped into the force, presenting Luke Skywalker’s light- saber to him on a rocky planet. In the film, Han Solo says Luke went searching for the original Jedi tem- ple, where the Jedi guarded peace and justice for thousands of gen- erations. Is this where Rey finds him? Need to take some deep breaths, slow down, and get present? Soon the Apple Watch will help users take a timeout. Apple’s new mindfulness app, Breathe, is one of many upgrades coming to the watch’s health and fitness tracking capabilities. Here are a few mindfulness- related slang words that have caught our attention. JOMO You’ve likely heard of FOMO—fear of missing out—but have you heard of JOMO, or joy of missing out? JOMO was coined as a rebellion against FOMO, and we love it. STUFFOCATION It speaks for itself— who hasn’t felt suf- focated by having too much stuff? MONOTASKING Research has found what we call “multitasking” is in fact just our brains switching between tasks really quickly, usually at the expense of quality and efficiency. Enter “monotask- ing,” the conscious decision to do one thing at a time. A MIND FOR EXERCISING Accord- ing to past studies, mindful people tend to exercise more. But why? Based on surveying 244 French adults, researchers at University of Paris Descartes specu- late that greater awareness of thoughts and emotions relating to physical activ- ity can enhance an intrinsic moti- vation to exercise. self-judgment—and a sense of common humanity, recog nizing that we all experience failure and suffering. Parents with more self-compassion were more likely to practice mindful parenting, use an adaptive parenting style (blending authoritativeness with supportiveness), and feel less stressed about child-rearing. Parents: Be Kind to Yourselves does say, “It’s great to see Apple developing apps that have the potential to help people become more aware of what’s going on in their bodies.” October 2016 mindful 13 ILLUSTRATION©GRAPHICBURGER/360MOCKUPS,PHOTOGRAPH©SSCOTTWILKINSON(TOP)
