Mindful : October 2014
My father would always kid with us, when I would say something like, “I am happy,” or, “I am sad,” or, “I want this,” or, “I love that,” he would always ask us, “Well, who is the I?” I would sit there and wonder, who was this “I.” In high school I had probably an ea rly life crisis, if you want to call it that, because I didn’t understand what everyone was striving for—the parties, the grades, all of it. I knew it was important but I knew that wasn’t it. That wasn’t the point. And what I think my parents did was give me space to sit with that. I was thankful to have parents who questioned why they were here every day and allowed space formetodoitaswell. How did that translate into a formal meditation practice? My practice is not a consistent practice. When I do it, it makes every decision a little lighter. It makes tough periods less hard. And it became the means that allowed me to get through the tough times, because I know that the world is arbitrar y. Even Indiegogo, as much as Danae Ringelmann at Indiegogo headquarters. it’s a company that’s doing really good things for people, it’s still just something for me to do. That doesn’t mean it’s not important. It doesn’t mean it’s not worth seeing the work through, but it allows metoseethatit’snotwhoIam.Imust see it as a being that I need to nurture, not something that I identify with and get lost in. If that happened I wouldn’t beabletoserveitinthewayIneedto serve it. I need to be able to step away from it. What are the next steps forward for Indiegogo? Our immediate next step is to continue to expand our platform—the functionality, the features, the education that ’s embed- ded in it, to ensure every single person on this planet who has an idea can actually bring it to life. We’re already in foreign languages, five currencies, and we’ll continue to expand. We’ll enhance our educationa l support since crowdfunding is still kind of a new thing—in fact, we started before the word crowdfunding even existed.
