Research Roundup The future is now—at least that’s what most people feel, according to psychologists from Har vard and the University of Virginia. They asked 19,000 adults if they think their current ideas and values will change much in the future. Most par ticipants said no, despite acknowl- edging how much they had already changed in their lives to that point. According to the researchers, people generally “regard the present as a watershed moment at which they have finally become the person they will be for the rest of their lives.” 1 Mindfulness training can help schoolchildren improve their behavior, according to the largest randomized-controlled study to date on mindfulness and children. Mindful Schools and the University of California– Davis, par tnered to conduct the study during the 2011-2012 school year. Researchers studied 915 students from three Oakland public schools. They found that mindfulness improved “paying attention, self-calming, and social compliance.” 3 Doctors’ empathy helps patients deal better with their pain. Researchers from Michigan State University found that patients’ pain tolerance increased when doctors chatted with them about their concerns before per form- ing a medical procedure. The control group was only asked specific questions about their medical histor y. 4 Rudeness at work doesn’t just hur t people, it’s costly. A 14-year study of 14,000 Americans and Canadians found that workplace incivility damages creativity and productivity. Eighty percent of disrespected workers lost work time worr ying about a specific incident, 78% said their commitment to the organization declined, and 66% said their job per formance suffered. Half of workers repor ted being treated rudely at least once a week. 5 ● Superheroes in training Superheroes may only be the stuff of comics and movies, but playing one in a video game may actually make you more altruistic.
